Museum of the Yucatecan Song

Museum of the Yucatecan Song which includes signage and heritage elements

Devoted to the music and poetry of the Yucatán peninsula, this museum celebrates traditional Trova music for its integral part in regional cultural heritage.

A trip to the Museum of the Yucatecan Song is one of the highlights of a visit to Mérida. The museum’s motto translates as, “A door to the world of romantic music.” You’ll find it to be exactly that. Come to see the wonderful collection of instruments, lyrics and paintings that document this soulful musical history.

Enter the first room to learn about traditional Mayan instruments and their connection to religious ceremonies. Carved wooden and stone pipes are beautifully crafted in the forms of fish and birds and give an insight into the Mayan’s strong connection with nature.

Continue on through the rooms to learn how the Trova style developed when traditional Mayan songs came into contact with strong musical influences from Cuba, Colombia and Spain. Check out the interactive displays that showcase the styles of the different musical ages. Some of the eras explored are the Golden Age, Modern Age, and the Age of Poets and Composers. Spend time in the virtual gallery to listen to examples of styles and artists from around the region.

See the gallery of over 50 oil paintings and busts depicting the most famous musicians from the state. Admire the collection of the artists’ guitars, microphones and antique manuscripts. The beautiful courtyard contains life-size statues of some of these public figures.

Feel your body moving to the beat during one of the museum’s musical evenings. Enjoy a live band as they pay homage to some of the old greats or entertain with original pieces. The museum’s primary aim is to preserve and disseminate regional music and does so by hosting nights of top-class entertainment.

Head to the cafeteria to buy refreshments and browse the little museum shop to pick up gifts. Choose from a great selection of specialty books, records and souvenirs. Check museum opening hours and entry fees ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

If you love music, poetry and art, the Museum of the Yucatecan Song is sure to find a special place in your heart.
