Stroll along a scenic walkway through a pretty Wellington Town Belt reserve to this lookout for spectacular panoramic views of the city.

Visit Mount Victoria Lookout for stunning views of Wellington’s commercial centre and striking harbour. Stop at the peaceful hillside to admire a historic memorial or explore many nearby natural and recreational areas. The lookout is part of Wellington Town Belt, a large public area with grassy parks and picturesque reserves.

From the lookout, watch cruise ships and boats sailing in and out of Wellington Harbour. The viewing platform is about 200 meters (650 feet) above the city. It provides outstanding views of Wellington Waterfront and the city’s cultural precinct. Pack a picnic and spend a few hours at the lookout.

Wellington International Airport is located to the south of the site. Observe airliners taking off and landing as you relax on the hillside. Other significant areas you can see include Tinakori Hill and Hutt Valley. Bring a camera to capture the excellent views of Wellington and the surrounding region.

Notice a memorial to American aviator Richard Byrd near the lookout. Byrd used a base in New Zealand to conduct Antarctic expeditions. The famous aviator made the first flight over the South Pole in 1929. The summit also features information panels and a bronze cannon. In the late 19th century, the cannon was fired daily at noon to signal the time.

Walk a scenic trail, such as Southern Walkway via Wellington Town Belt, to reach Mount Victoria Lookout. The Town Belt forms a horseshoe shape of hilly terrain and grassy parks around Wellington. The large area is also great for jogging, mountain biking and bird watching.

Drive or take a bus to Mount Victoria Lookout from the centre of Wellington in less than 15 minutes. The lookout is located east of central Wellington and can be accessed via a network of walking and cycling tracks. Use the large car park and restrooms next to the site. The area is free to visit.

Stop at Mount Victoria Lookout for outstanding views during your exploration of Wellington Town Belt.
