View one of Japan’s most legendary fall sights and see blazing fall colors in this garden of maple trees at the foot of holy Mount Misen on Miyajima Island.

Momijidani Park (Maple Leaf Park) is a remarkable garden of beautifully maintained Japanese maple trees in the foothills of Mount Misen, directly behind the famous Itsukushima Shrine. Wander through the elegantly designed park to enjoy overlooks of Momijidani River escarpments, traditional bridges and the mesmerizing foliage of hundreds of maple trees.

Stroll along the paths that lead through enchanting groves of over 200 maple trees, which were first cultivated in this area in the Edo period. The path winds over cut-stone steps and gentle hills and along the banks of the river. From a picturesque wooden bridge, painted red, enjoy views of the water coursing over smooth stones.

This park is a favorite spot for locals to visit to admire the turning of the seasons. It is renowned for its magnificent fall leaves. Visit Momijidani Park during the fall to see the maple leaves turn rich autumnal tones of red, orange and gold. The colors are particularly impressive when contrasted with the gray stone steps and the dense green cypress trees. Bring your camera to take photographs of the awe-inspiring kaleidoscope of colors.

Ascend the sacred slopes of Mount Misen on foot or via the Miyajima Ropeway, which departs from the center of Momijidani Park. Several serene walking paths lead up through Mount Misen’s ancient forests and pass quiet temples. Whichever way you climb the mountain, you’ll be amazed by the vistas from the summit. From the Mount Misen Observatory and the Shishiiwa Observatory, enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding hilltops, the forested valleys and the many islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

Momijidani Park is open daily and free to enter. It is about a 20-minute walk from Miyajima Pier. Pay a fee to use the Miyajima Ropeway. The best time to visit Momijidani Park is during the months of November and December. The cherry blossoms are also a delight to view in spring, while summer brings lush green foliage to the park. Nearby, find swimming beaches, a relaxing campground and several vacation accommodations.
