See the majestic porpoises and sea lions of the Seto Inland Sea or touch penguins and shoreline creatures at this comprehensive aquarium on Miyajima Island.

Miyajima Public Aquarium (Miyajima Suizokukan) is a modern showcase of the diverse sea life that resides in the Onoseto Strait, the Seto Inland Sea and the wider oceans of Japan. Discover an underwater world filled with marine animals and vegetation and learn about the intricate ecology of Miyajima’s coast and freshwater systems. Check out beautiful displays of shimmering fish and see the sunameri, or finless porpoise, which is the symbol of the aquarium.

Stroll through the dark corridors of the aquarium and gaze into the bright tanks, filled with diverse sea life. Spot corals and seaweed species, as well as schools of glimmering fish. More than 13,000 creatures spanning over 350 individual species are on display at this aquarium. You might see lionfish, upside-down jellyfish, archerfish, otters, horseshoe crabs, sharks and rays.

Check out the Mudflats in Miyajima and Rocky Shore of Friendship touch pool exhibits, which replicate a natural environment where visitors can observe the creatures intimately. Stay for an informative presentation and you might get the chance to touch some of the creatures. Feel the slick watertight feathers of a penguin or the unusual textures of sea stars and sea cucumbers. Don’t miss the Miyajima Aquarium’s oyster farm, which replicates some of the oyster rafts found throughout Hiroshima prefecture.

Head to the large pool left of the main entrance, where you can watch exciting live performances with sea lions. A large museum shop has Miyajima Aquarium souvenirs and other gifts available for purchase. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the Miyajima Aquarium’s outdoor picnic area.

Miyajima Aquarium is located on Miyajima (Itsukushima) Island, about a 25-minute walk from the island’s ferry pier. Taxis are also available on the island. The aquarium is open daily. Pay admission, which covers daily demonstrations. Students receive half-price tickets.

Walking to the aquarium from the pier, pass the magnificent Itsukushima Shrine and its iconic red torii gate. Combine your visit to Miyajima Aquarium with a trip to the Five-Storied Pagoda and the holy Mount Misen.
