Find out about Sheffield’s growth over the centuries with this museum’s insight into the city’s metalworking renown and the art collection of a celebrated writer.

The Millennium Gallery showcases the art, craft and design of Sheffield, presenting the city’s highly regarded craftsmanship in metalwork in a spacious and modern museum. Its two permanent exhibits include an array of around 13,000 metal artifacts and a collection assembled for the workers of Sheffield by the esteemed British writer John Ruskin. Learn about British industry and art through these fascinating displays.

The modern and light-filled museum opened in 2001. Browse the works in the museum’s two permanent exhibits. John Ruskin founded the Ruskin Collection as a museum and haven for Sheffield’s industrial workers more than 130 years ago. Admire some of the pieces he most cherished, such as Renaissance and Gothic artworks, mosaics, illustrations of the natural world and Medieval manuscripts. Highlights are the surviving photographs from the Victorian era and watercolors by Ruskin himself.

The museum’s Metalwork Collection showcases the beautifully designed cutlery and metal craftsmanship that defined the city throughout its industrial boom. Attend one of the many events that take place in and around the gallery. These include workshops on drawing and lectures on art history.

Take a break from the collections with snacks and refreshments in the museum café. Purchase Sheffield-themed items from the gallery boutique. Buy stationery, artistic prints and souvenirs in this eclectic shop.

The gallery is open daily from morning until late afternoon and admission is free.

Find the Millennium Gallery beside the Sheffield Town Hall in the center of the city. Nearby attractions include the Crucible Theater, the O2 Academy and Graves Art Gallery. Take a train to the Sheffield Train Station and walk northwest for 5 minutes to reach the museum or ride a bus to one of the nearby stops.
