Leap off rocks and dive in the warm, mirror-like water of Matapa Chasm. Discover schools of tropical fish and tiny crustaceans or just lie on the surrounding rocks that are warmed by the midday heat.
Peer into the deep Matapa Chasm and take a moment to consider the elements that must have combined over millennia to create this natural phenomenon. See how erosion of the sturdy limestone cliffs has formed this narrow gorge. It was used as a bathing pool by Niue royalty.
If you’re feeling adventurous, climb up the sides of the canyon and leap into the waters below. After you break the surface, notice the peculiar increase in water temperature the farther down you go. This is caused by cool rainwater that filters through the rocks and mixes with the milder ocean. Those who don’t wish to jump can climb into the water from a safer spot at the bottom of the rocks.
Be sure to bring a snorkel and mask as the warm water is the perfect place for a wealth of sea life. Dive down to see crabs and crayfish as well as several species of tropical fish in the incredible visibility of the water.
The canyon also offers a great place to sunbathe. Find a smooth, weathered rock, spread out a thick towel and enhance your tan. Enjoy the amazing sense of serenity with the only sound the gentle breaking waves in the distance.
To reach Matapa Chasm, drive to Hikutavake on the northern coast and walk for about 10 minutes along a pretty forest trail until you reach the sea. Matapa Chasm is always accessible and is safe for swimming at all states of the tide.
