Arrive at Hikutavake and head off along the woodland footpath that steadily drops toward the sea. With the sound of breaking waves growing clearer, turn toward spectacular Matapa Chasm. Gouged into the thick layers of limestone that make up the island, this long channel acts as an idyllic swimming hole bordered on either side by atmospheric cliffs. Jump off rocks into the sea below or grab a snorkel and mask and search for small fish that have made it their home.
Pull yourself from the refreshing water and continue to Talava Arches. Unlike the sheltered chasm you have just visited, this is a labyrinth of dark tunnels and bridges that are constantly at the mercy of the elements. Come at low tide to walk on the pretty golden reef beneath the vast arches and look for crabs and crayfish scuttling around rock pools.
The big seas, high cliffs and jagged rocks mean that entering the water yourself is not recommended here. However, beyond the exposed conditions, sightings of dolphins and whales are a regular occurrence. Watch as they ride the small wind-swell and blow huge clouds of spray into the clear sky.
Hikutavake is on the northern coast of Niue, a scenic 10-minute drive from Alofi. The area is always open to visitors and parking is free.
