Flowers, monuments and a magnificent sea view make this open space one of the most attractive spots in Valletta.
Wander among the sculptures, monuments, pathways and lush vegetation of Lower Barrakka Gardens. This scenic spot on the waterfront sits on the bastions overlooking the Grand Harbor. Relax, learn about the city’s history and enjoy some excellent views out to sea.
As you stroll through the picturesque park, stop to look at the monuments. Admire the neoclassical memorial to Vice Admiral Sir Alexander John Ball. He was a close friend of Lord Horatio Nelson and drove the occupying French army out of Malta at the end of the 19th century.
Walk over to the path that surrounds the gardens and overlooks the harbor. See the Siege Bell Memorial, a belfry in the form of a neoclassical temple that contains a huge bronze bell. It was erected in 1992 to commemorate the 7,000 service personnel and civilians who lost their lives in the Siege of Malta during World War II. The bell chimes every day at noon. The memorial is
As you move around the gardens, past the fountain and neatly trimmed hedges, you may notice a large number of cats. They come to rest under the shade of palm trees. Go to the terrace and read the commemorative plaques. They mark numerous historic events, including the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
Sit on a bench and watch boats and cruise ships entering and leaving the harbor. The view from here also takes in Fort St. Angelo and Fort St. Elmo.
The Lower Barrakka Gardens are open every day from morning until late in the evening and admission is free. The facilities include toilets and a café.
Situated above the Grand Harbor, the gardens are approximately a 15-minute walk from Valletta's bus station.
