This tranquil garden offers a relaxing change from the crowded city, with bridges, waterways, flower beds, tombs and medieval monuments to explore.

Lodhi Garden is in the middle of bustling New Delhi and offers tranquility amid the noise and pace of the city. It’s a popular picnic spot for locals, and a favourite setting for morning walks or jogs. This large green oasis in New Delhi was established in the 15th and 16th centuries by the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties.

Relax under the trees and listen to the many birds that have made their homes in the garden. There are information labels on some of the native plants so that visitors can learn about Indian flora.

Stroll around the grounds and take in the different architectural styles that coexist in the carefully kept garden. There are medieval monuments and a large rubble-construct dome surrounding a central courtyard. There are also a number of mausoleums, including the tomb of Muhammad Shah, who was the last ruler of the Sayyid dynasty.

Another interesting structure is Athpula Bridge, an architectural wonder that rests on eight piers and forms seven arches over a calm waterway.

The National Bonsai Park is part of the garden. It houses a collection of miniature trees and plants, which some locals say look best at sunset under soft light.

An hour or two is plenty of time to wander through Lodhi Garden and see the famous architecture. On a warm day, it is easy to spend several hours, or even a whole day basking in the sun on the green lawns.

The garden is close to the Khan Market, so there are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. It’s easy to get to the gardens from anywhere in the city. Buses stop at the Lodhi Road Crossing, which is less than 5 minutes’ walk from the garden, and there is a metro train station 20 minutes’ walk away.
