Bike, drive or walk across this suspension bridge to enjoy views of mountainous landscapes and to access the picturesque island of Kvaløya.

Travel across Kvalsund Bridge (Kvalsundbrau), a suspension bridge that crosses the Kvalsundet Strait and connects mainland Norway with the island of Kvaløya. At 2,431 feet (741 meters) in length, it is one of the longest suspension bridges in the country. The landmark structure is also the world’s northernmost suspension bridge.

Traverse the bridge by bike, car and on foot. If you choose to bike or walk, pause in the middle to appreciate the views. Gaze out over the calm, crystalline water of the strait. Look at the mountains, which bloom with vibrant shades of green during the summer, while snowfall in winter creates a blanket of brilliant white. You will also be able to see the Porsa Monument, which is located under the bridge. It commemorates the Norwegian resistance from World War II. For most of the war, the country was occupied by German forces.

Cross over the bridge to explore the island of Kvaløya. Go to Hammerfest, a fishing town on the island’s northwest coast. This lays claim to being the northernmost town in the world. Explore its streets and attractions, including Galleri Kulturbanken where you can see art inspired by the area. Take the Zig Zag Path up Mount Salen. Experience the midnight sun and the northern lights from the waterfront and mountaintops.

While here, catch a boat to the neighboring island of Seiland, for outdoor adventures in Seiland National Park. Go hiking, fishing, wildlife spotting and participate in a host of water sports.

It is well worth coming back to the bridge at night to take a look at it. The crossing makes for a stunning sight with its lights and their reflections in the water.

Kvalsund Bridge is about a 5-minute drive from Kvalsund’s village center. You can also walk to the structure in about 30 minutes.
