As the center of the three crossings in central Bonn, Kennedy Bridge is a steel behemoth with lanes for road vehicles, bicycles and trams. Pedestrians can also cross the structure, which provides wonderful views of the Rhine River and connects the city center of Bonn and the district of Beuel. Climb aboard the boat restaurant and enjoy a romantic meal in the evening.
Consider the intriguing history of the bridges that have existed at this point on the river. The current crossing was built on the ruined foundations of the Rhine Bridge that had been destroyed in World War II. Constructed in 1948, the bridge took its current name in 1963, just 10 days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It has since been enlarged and renovated.
Admire the design of the steel bridge, which is made up of a wide central arch flanked on both sides by smaller arches. It is 1,293 feet (394 meters) long. Solar panels on the side of this green bridge mean it can generate its own electricity in an eco-friendly manner. See the bridge illuminated at night and reflected in the calm water of the Rhine River.
Walk along the pedestrian lane and reach the middle of the crossing for excellent views of the river. You’ll see boats passing beneath the main arch, with mountains and woodland making up a scenic backdrop. Locate the impressive steeple of the Sankt Josef church on the Beuel side of the bridge. The crossing’s eastern end features a tree-lined boardwalk overlooking the river.
The Kennedy Bridge crosses the Rhine River in the center of Bonn. Take a tram or bus to the Konrad Adenauer Platz on the eastern side of the river or the Bertha bon Suttner Platz on the western side.
