The Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig, ZFMK) displays a fascinating collection of exotic and familiar animals from around the world in a complex of museum buildings. Founded in 1912, the ZFMK has been at the forefront of zoological research in Bonn for over a century. Travel to the African savannah, peer into a tropical rainforest, set sail for the polar regions and explore the desert in ZFMK’s captivating dioramas.

Begin your discovery of the world’s creatures at the museum’s central exhibition, Our Blue Planet – The Living Network. This exhibition highlights the complex ecologies that exist across the world, from the plains of Africa to the woods of central Europe. See expertly designed dioramas that display the taxidermy creatures in lifelike scenes. Savanna – Changeful Paradise forms the central part of the exhibition and is displayed in a bright atrium. You’ll see elephants, zebras and other exotic animals in this section.

Make your way to the Arctic and Antarctic diorama to see fascinating skeletons of deep-sea creatures and learn about the importance of the ocean currents in these unique ecologies.

More extreme climates are on display in the desert exhibit. Learn about camels and other resilient animals that have made this landscape their home. Local animals take the stage in the Central EuropeDiscover Homeland exhibit, which looks at the impact of agriculture on forests.

Take a guided tour around the museum and check out the latest temporary exhibition. You will need to book tours in English ahead of your visit. The research buildings hold staggering collections of insects. Visit the library for research material on zoology. The research institute also hosts conferences and symposia with biology and science themes.
