Kauppatori (Market Square) is a public square next to Helsinki’s main harbor. Purchase fresh food, such as traditional meat pastries, sweets and other Finnish delicacies. This renowned square is also near Esplanadi Park, Helsinki City Hall and many other visitor attractions.

Stop at the lively market square on the first Friday evening of every summer month to see a large display of vintage American cars. The origins of this tradition are unknown however, it has become an excellent opportunity for visitors and locals to admire classic cars and meet the owners.

The Baltic Herring Festival in Helsinki occurs every year in early October. Watch Kauppatori transform into a bustling maritime-themed set. Enjoy Baltic herring prepared in many different ways, including smoked, raw, fried, pickled and fermented.

Find a heated café tent in the winter for hot coffee and sweet treats. The famous square is also known for its selection of delicious berries, colorful flowers and gourmet ice cream. Stop at Kauppatori between visits to other excellent attractions, such as Helsinki City Museum and Helsinki Cathedral.

Old Market Hall is next to Kauppatori and features some of the city’s finest seafood and delicacies. This inviting hall opened in the late 19th century and sells fine cheeses, fresh fish and shellfish, traditional cakes and spices. Purchase coffee and light meals in Old Market Hall when visiting the historic square.

Helsinki City Hall is also located next to Kauppatori. This facility features a gallery with free exhibits showing artwork by Finnish artists. Attend a free event in this stunning neoclassical-style building or plan other activities in Helsinki City Hall’s lobby.

Find Kauppatori (Market Square) at the eastern end of Esplanadi, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Helsinki Airport. The popular market square is open year-round however, opening times vary by season.
