Whether viewing from a boat, bridge or the riverbank, this set of waterfalls is a spectacular sight as a huge body of water surges forward and downward.

Stand close to the Huka Falls and watch as powerful cascades of fast flowing water come crashing down from a height of 36 feet (11 meters) into a pool.

Huka is a set of waterfalls that is formed when the wide Waikato River is forced through a shallow ravine. As it happens, a colossal amount of water rushes over the rocks, up to 58,118 gallons (220, 000 liters) per second. This equals one Olympic-size swimming pool every 11 seconds.

View the spectacular natural attraction from tracks that run alongside the river. There are also several viewing platforms. One of the best views of the falls can be enjoyed from the swing bridge across the river, built during the Maori Wars. Consider seeing the falls from the water. Get close to the spray on a thrilling jet boat ride, ferry cruise or on a whitewater rafting expedition.

The falls are situated in Wairakei Tourist Park which offers plenty of other thrilling adventures and natural attractions. After you have marvelled at the sight of thundering water, go hiking or cycling along walking trails and mountain bike tracks that skirt the Waikato River.

Check out Craters of the Moon, which is also in the park. This is a geothermal area of craters and sulphuric steam clouds. Afterwards, get your heart pumping on a skydiving trip or by Bungee jumping. Those with a head for heights might also enjoy the elevated rope course. The winter months bring a blanket of snow and the park’s snowfields open.

Huka Falls are approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of Taupo. Intercity buses stop here and there is also an on-site car park. Alternatively, if you want to stretch your legs, hike from Taupo to Huka Falls. The 2-hour return trail begins at Spa Park and passes through native forests and by the powerful Aratiatia Rapids.
