Spend a day shopping along the lively commercial hub of Bui Thi Xuan and get your hands on the latest electronic toys and gadgets to hit the shelves, take your pick of designer fashions or simply sit in a café and watch the busy streets outside. Return in the evening to drink in the street’s trendy bars.
Notice that many of Ho Chi Minh City’s streets are named after legendary cultural figures. This road is no different. Bui Thi Xuan was a female warrior during the early 19th century whose list of achievements includes fighting a tiger and training an army of elephants for battle. These days the only battles are between rival shop owners, who compete for your attention with enticing window displays filled with flashing electronics and stylish clothes.
Shopping is without doubt the main attraction here. Hunt for a bargain on the latest phones, cameras and music players in the electronics stores or try on the trendiest fashions in the boutique clothing shops. As well as the very latest fashions, you can also buy handmade silk garments from smaller shops tucked into side streets. Be sure to shop around and don’t be afraid to ask for a discount.
Take a break at one of the roadside cafés. Enjoy a sweet pastry and a strong Vietnamese coffee while watching the commuters, salesmen and traffic on the busy street outside. You can also get fresh, tasty lunches from many of the cafés and food stalls on this street.
Come back in the evening to see the street glowing with the lights of fancy bars. Join the mix of city workers, hip locals and international travelers for a cocktail or cold beer in the warm evening air. You’ll also find several restaurants open in the evening, serving everything from spicy local fare to recognizable international food.
As you’d expect from a commercial center like this, there are several hotels within walking distance. Stay in a luxury high-rise suite with superb city views or opt for a more home-like guesthouse.
