The massive shield volcano of Haleakalā, otherwise known as the East Maui Volcano, takes up a huge proportion of the island of Maui. It sits within the Haleakalā National Park and is home to the iconic Haleakalā or "House of the Sun" Crater. Visitors from far and wide come to watch the sunrise from this magnificent vantage point and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the island's beaches.
Haleakalā is now dormant, but was active for countless millennia, spilling lava from its vents over millions of years. Similar activity was occurring in a volcano to the west, and these lava flows eventually met and fused to form the island of Maui. The vast Haleakalā National Park now takes up 135 square kilometres of the eastern and central part of the island.
Head to the Summit Area. When you arrive, you'll be struck by its unearthly quality and deep red rocky landscape. It's not hard to imagine you're on another planet, and many visitors comment on its similarity to their image of Mars. The island's highest peak, Puʻu ʻUlaʻula, is the best place to view Haleakalā Crater. You'll want to get to the top before daybreak so you can enjoy the magnificent sunset, therefore your best bet is to camp overnight.
It's a steep hike up through the clouds to the top of Puʻu ʻUlaʻula, or Red Hill, which rises 3,055 metres above sea level, but the views are more than worth the effort. Watch as the sun's rays hit the majestic Haleakalā Crater, which spans an incredible 4 kilometres by 12 kilometres. During your hike back down through the forest and wildflower meadows, keep an eye out for the park's geese, rare birds and insects.
Haleakalā National Park is open 365 days a year and charges a small entrance fee to access the summit. The 56 kilometres of trails and roads around Haleakalā Crater are best explored by car and on foot. If you're hiking to the summit don't forget to bring warm clothing.
