Denmark's only mountain town, located on the north-east coast of Bornholm Island, Gudhjem offers the perfect setting for a wonderful holiday. Here you will find a relaxed island mentality and year-round stunning nature. There are also many restaurants, shops and museums, so you can get a little bit of everything on your holiday in Gudhejm.
Gudhjem has always been a fishing town, and at the end of the 1800s, it became the first town to smoke herring. This soon became a large part of its industry and identity, and Gudhjem has since been known as the place where the smoke comes from. Nowadays, tourism is its main industry, and its signature dish "Sol over Gudhjem" ("Sun over Gudhjem") – smoked herring with egg yolk on rye bread – is well-known everywhere in Denmark.
Visit the Oluf Høst Museum, the celebrated painter's home which was turned into a museum, or the Gudhjem Museum, located in the old preserved station. Take a trip to Karamel Kompagniet's shop and buy its famous sweets. Walk up to the Gudhjem Church, which overlooks the town, or go south to the fishing village of Melsted.
There's plenty to do in the Gudhjem area. There are swimming pools and cinemas, and with a ferry connection to Christiansø Island, you can easily cross over to the ancient forts. For a bit of city life, go to Brøddegade Street, where you will find shops, cafés and restaurants. Gudhjem, with its rocky terrain, is also a great place to explore nature. Walk up the 157 ft tall Bokul Hill, where you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of the town.
To get to the sunshine island, you have to fly or take a ferry. Travelling around the island can be done by bus or by car, or you can rent a bike and experience Bornholm's nature to its fullest.
A weekend getaway in Gudhjem means you can relax and enjoy nature, all whilst having easy access to the other attractions on Bornholm.
