With its extensive collections and impressive contemporary works, the GAMeC is Bergamo’s impressive home of modern art. It has a modern appearance to complement its content, which comprises inventive and brilliantly creative pieces. Embark on a guided tour of the gallery for a comprehensive understanding of the themes and the artworks. Its full name is Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo.

Check out some of the temporary exhibitions, which have included such artists as Andy Warhol. The site also has permanent pieces, split into the Spajani Collection, the Manzù Collection and the Stucchi Collection. Make your way through the Stucchi section for the abstract artworks by Alberto Magnelli, Atanasio Soldati and Luigi Veronesi.

Learn about 20th-century Italian paintings in the Spajani Collection, which comprises about 40 works. The Manzù Collection was donated by its namesake 20th-century sculptor, who hails from Bergamo. See the array of artworks from the 1930s, including such artists as Cucchi, Alviani and Bonnet. Other big names in the museum include Vanessa Beecroft and Jan Fabre. Examine the display of medals and the photographic installation that complete the permanent collection.

Attend one of the many events that take place here year-round. These have included lectures on post-digital art and night visits to the museum. Make your way to the pleasant courtyard and enjoy snacks and drinks at the café.

The museum opens Wednesday through Monday from morning until late afternoon, with a 2-hour break at lunch. Pay a fee to see the temporary exhibits and get discounts for kids. The permanent collection is free to visit.

The GAMeC is a little east of the Citta Alta district in Bergamo. Ride a bus to the Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan and walk west for several minutes to the Piazza Giacomo Carrara, where you’ll find the museum. See nearby sights, including the Accademia Carrara Museum, the Galleria Ceribelli and the Accademia di Belle Arte G. Carrara.
