Learn about the private life and the famous compositions of Bergamo’s gifted son in this majestic 12th-century palace where you can also see historic musical instruments and works of art.

The Donizetti Museum is an institution dedicated to the life of an acclaimed composer. Gaetano Donizetti was born just outside the town walls of Bergamo and went on to produce celebrated compositions. Visit this charming museum on the narrow, cobbled Via Arena to learn about his exceptional life.

Walk through the elegant hallway and examine the paintings on the wall. They portray an array of important musicians, including Donizetti. Inspect the various exhibits showing mementos and records connected to the composer. Learn about his most famous works, including Lucia di Lammermoor and L’Eliser d’Amore.

Admire the stunning neoclassical frescoes by artist Paolo Vincenzo Bonomini. Get a closer look at the displays of musical instruments and documents. See the small cello of local violinist Alfredo Piatti and the collection of 19th-century wind instruments.

Among the highlights is the piano that belonged to the family of Donizetti’s wife. Examine the autographed music sheet for part of the Elisir d’Amore composition. The museum also has a graceful outdoor part, comprising an arcade surrounding a courtyard.

The museum was established in 1906, with donations from Baroness Rota Scotti and Cristoforo Scotti, owner of Donizetti’s final house. Note that it opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon, with a break at lunch. There is a fee to enter the museum.

The Donizetti Museum is located on the cobbled Via Arena road that runs through the Citta Alta district of Bergamo. Take the funicular up to the historic center and walk northwest for 5 minutes to arrive here. Enjoy views over the town from this elevated spot.
