Stroll along the scenic shorefront, check out the historic wooden pier or dine out in style on the esplanade of this tranquil coastal suburb.

Urangan Esplanade frames the seaside suburb of Urangan in Hervey Bay. Welcoming, sunny and easy going, this waterfront precinct epitomizes the Australian lifestyle. Go for a walk, take in the views of the Coral Sea or get something nice to eat.

Begin with a stroll out onto the historic Urangan Pier. Stretching no less than 2,847 feet (868 meters) out to sea, this once commercial pier that is over 100 years old is the iconic landmark of the esplanade. Gaze out across the water to take in the region’s islands in the Coral Sea. Look for birds circling above, dolphins cruising the waves and stingrays gliding through the water.

Head back to the mainland and find some shade in Pier Park. Take a seat under a tree or get into the Aussie spirit by cooking up some sausages or a steak on the public barbecues. Come here to catch the Wednesday and Saturday morning community markets to buy some fresh local produce or have coffee with the locals.

Turn in either direction along the waterfront for scenic walking paths along the coast. As you go, look for the unusual melaleuca trees. Notice how the soft fibrous bark of these endemic Australian trees looks like rough sheets of paper.

Head west from the pier and choose from one of the many cafés and restaurants with bay views. Options range from quick and simple treats such as ice creams to luxury dining.

If you head east from the pier you will pass a quieter residential area before reaching the underwater delight of the Reefworld Aquarium and Shark Swim. This small aquarium has a large tank and several smaller ones and offers the chance of getting close and personal with some of its inhabitants. Take the plunge and hop in to swim with small and harmless reef sharks or help feed the graceful, old turtles.

Urangan Esplanade, also named the Charlton Esplanade, is easily reached on foot if you are staying in Urangan. If you are coming from farther afield, it is easiest to get here by car. Free parking is available along the streets and beside the park. The park has public toilet facilities.
