A variety of slopes for all abilities and some excellent après-ski options are on offer at this ski field just minutes from central Queenstown.

Traverse ski and snowboard runs for all skill levels at Coronet Peak, a 691-acre (280-hectare) ski field to the northeast of Queenstown. Take on moguls and off-piste areas, then recharge at one of the many cafés and restaurants that serve hot food and drinks throughout the day.

Coronet Peak has long been recognized as one of New Zealand’s premier locations for winter sports. The resort features high-speed lifts, snow-making facilities and an excellent visitor center, complete with equipment rental and a shop.

First-timers will love the beginner area at Coronet Peak. This is completely detached from the more advanced slopes, meaning that fast-moving skiers slaloming through the field are not an issue. Try the short Magic Carpet runs before you hop on the chairlift to have a go at the Big Easy.

Intermediates are extremely well catered for with 45 percent of the runs at Coronet Peak graded blue. Be sure to check out the M1, one of the less challenging but most enjoyable runs. From here, take the T-bar and quad chairlifts up the mountain to explore more than 10 different black-graded runs. These generally get more challenging the higher you go and incorporate some mogul sections. The treeless landscape means that experienced riders can safely drop off the sides of the on-piste slopes to carve through untouched powder and steep bowl sections.

When it’s time for a break, make your way back down to the horseshoe-shaped base village. Relax in the large seating area and take your pick from the village’s dining options, ranging from fast-food cafés to formal restaurants serving modern New Zealand cuisine.

Coronet Peak is located 20 minutes northeast of Queenstown. Equipment rental is well priced and lessons run daily for skiers of all abilities. There is a crèche for younger children. The season at Coronet Peak runs from the start of June through October. Check online for exact dates and snow forecasts.
