As you luxuriate in the landscaped square, spend a moment imagining the busy collection of warehouses, shops and hotels that stood here before it was cleared in a movement to improve Canadians’ lives via beautiful public spaces. At the heart of the square stands the National War Memorial, also known as “The Response.” Stroll around this vast and elegant memorial to all Canadian Armed Forces personnel of the past, present and future. Reflect on their sacrifice at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. During warmer months, watch sentries from the Ceremonial Guard in their full dress uniform.
Head to the park’s northern corner to view the Valiants Memorial, an array of nine busts and five statues paying tribute to the heroism of Canadians during wartime. Read the quote from Virgil, imprinted in multiple languages along the adjacent Sappers Staircase: “No day will ever erase you from the memory of time.”
