View marine life, swim a few laps or build a sandcastle in this serene bay located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

If you’re looking for a beach with gentle waves, Clovelly Beach is it. Because of the concrete slabs that line the channel, this beach is extremely sheltered and therefore great for swimming and splashing about with small children. The calm waters have led to an abundance of marine life, which draws many nature-loving locals.

Clovelly Beach stands out from other Sydney beaches because of the concrete slabs that give it the appearance of a large swimming pool. Step down one of the many ladders into the refreshing waters of the bay. Here you can simply relax or you can discover the world under the waves. Slip on snorkelling gear and turn your attention to the seafloor. Expect to see many different species of fish. Look for the famous blue grouper. Scuba diving is also available.

If you’d rather not swim in the ocean itself, you can still enjoy the soothing waters and idyllic setting of Clovelly in the saltwater pool. Swim laps or sit by the side and dangle your legs in the warm water.

You will also find a gorgeous sandy section near the shoreline of Clovelly Beach. Build sandcastles with your little ones and decorate them with washed-up treasures. Remember that the shells must stay on the beach, as they are important habitats for marine life.

The beach has public toilets and changing rooms with ramp access. Drive here and use the large free parking lot. To secure a good spot it’s always best to arrive fairly early in the morning or near the end of the afternoon. Public transportation access is great, with frequent buses arriving at the bus stop just a short walk from the beach.

When you want a break from the sun, buy food and drink at one of the local cafés. There are plenty to choose from in the area, especially if you walk to the nearby suburb of Coogee. The walk features lovely coastal views, and Coogee has another beautiful beach.

If you’re looking for a calm, sheltered beach, you simply can’t look past Clovelly.
