The Classic Car Collection is a gallery in the Cabela’s outfitters building showcasing more than 200 vintage vehicles. The collection contains an assortment of automobiles from the early 20th century to the modern era. Browse the wide range of famous brands of cars spread across this 1.1-acre (0.4-hectare) exhibit.
Upon entering the warehouse, notice the flurry of bright colors and shiny metal that greet you. Marvel at the 1938 Rolls-Royce and the two rare Lincolns. Other highlights are the Buick, the LaSalle and the Cadillac.
Drop in at the 1950s gas station to revel in nostalgia. Continuing the theme of wistfulness are the drive-in theater display and the original ticket booth from the local drive-in. Check out the Car Hoods Project that sees automobile parts repurposed as movie screens and watch the footage of historical car-related events.
Browse the traveling exhibits to inspect the array of cars on loan from owners. This collection of about 60 cars changes on every visit. Examine the works of art and vignettes that shed light on the history of the automobile. Make use of the interactive displays to learn about how these vehicles shaped our world. Note that the museum began in 2011 with a donation of 131 vehicles from the Taulborg family.
The site opens daily from morning until late afternoon year-round. On Sundays, it opens at noon. Pay a fee for entrance and get discounts for seniors, students and kids. Toddlers can visit for free.
Drive west from Lincoln for 130 miles (210 kilometers) to reach the Classic Car Collection in about 2 hours. It is on the eastern side of the Cabela’s building, which stands in the eastern outskirts of the small town of Kearney in southern Nebraska. Travel to some of the main sights in the region, such as Kearney Country Club Golf Course, Harmon Park and the MONA Museum of Nebraska Art.
