Church Of Girolamini

Escape the crowds and retreat to one of Naples’ hidden secrets for a peek at the work of some of Italy’s most prominent Renaissance artists.

One of the best things about the Church of Girolamini is the lack of throngs of tourists swarming around. Marvel at the plethora of stunning frescos and paintings of local greats that adorn the walls of this relatively unknown church as you wander around in blissful silence.

Drink in the beauty of this striking white marble façade from Piazza Girolamini, a spot which offers the best views and admire the sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul, created by Giuseppe Sanmartino, that stand proudly on top of this stunning structure beside the twin belfries.

The church was once the site of an old palace, Palazzo Seripando, which was donated to the priests of the Congregation of the Oratory in 1586. The palace was subsequently demolished and construction began in 1592 on what is now the Church of Girolamini. Despite its many facelifts over the years, the building is still a fine example of Florentine Renaissance architecture, boasting a Latin cross design and 3 naves with lateral churches.

The pièce de résistance of this imposing complex is embodied in the lush green courtyard that lies in the centre, a quiet oasis of calm that leaves visitors with a sense of peace and isolation from the bustling outside world.

Surrounding this perfectly manicured cloister is a monastery which houses a fine art gallery and a magnificent library. Featuring the work of masters such as Caracciolo and Ribera, the Quadreria gallery, although small, is home to some of the most important collections of Neapolitan art, with pieces ranging from the late 1400s to the 1700s. The vast, spacious halls of the Library of the Oratorian Fathers are also not to be missed as this is one of the richest libraries in the south of Italy with a collection of almost 160,000 books.

This hidden gem is not on most tourists’ radar, making it the perfect spot to peacefully indulge in fine art and architecture. Situated on Via Duomo, directly across from the Cathedral of Naples, the Church of Girolamini is open every day, except Sunday, and entry is free of charge.
