Don't be put off by the road through town.
We stayed there for two nights, coming from Ollaytantambo en route for Cusco. The main road through the town is not pretty, in fact we almost decided to drive on when we first got there. But the hotel is lovely - small, comfortable, a bit quirky. Next day, we walked up and around the hills to the east of town ... it's beautiful, with great views of the mountains all around. And if you do a counter-clockwise loop, you'll come down through Inca ruins and a cool market (a lot smaller and more authentic than Pisac ... less tat). An excellent 4-5 hour hike. Taxi to Cusco the next day was 20 ns, just flag one down at the main road.

an exceptional experience
Casa de Barro was a wonderful experience. The owner/manager went far beyond his role of manager. He stopped at a pharmacy for altitude sickness pills when I had tried 5 times and always found the pharmacy closed. This was when he was on his way to Cusco and he had to return to the hotel to deliver them. He not only gave us the information and advice for a hike to Lamay over a 14,000 foot pass but also drove us to the start of the hike and accompanied us until there would be no problem finding the trail. This was because on a Saturday morning it would be hard to find a taxi. He kept a close watch on my husband while I was away hiking. The caring and attendance of the staff was exceptional. The hotel was safe, convenient, clean, comfortable and very attractive.

It felt like we stayed with family!
Came with a group of six friends and we had great experience. Booked only two nights, but fell in love and stayed for four days. Started out with Jose (co-owner) picking us up from the late train in Ollantaytambo right on time, just like every day thereafter. Jose became our guide sharing info and his love for the Sacred Valley. The hotel was beautiful, with large rooms, great beds, wooden floors, good bathrooms/showers… and lovely views on snow-capped mountains. Naturally everything was very clean. Restaurant downstairs has a pretty good menue and a very attentive staff. Antonio (the other co-owner) made us feel like we owned the place. Asked us every evening what time we would like to get breakfast, where we wanted to go the next day etc. When we wanted to watch a movie after the day of hiking, he quietly started the fire and gave us a nice bottle of red wine (free). The town of Chinchero gave us a view of the Peruvian villagers’ life; peaceful but with fun things to do (visited textile making family). Location is central to many other sites in the Sacred Valley. I will send all my friends to Casa de Barro and hope to return here some day for another peaceful visit.

Hotel charmant, staff adorable !
