Browse a superb collection of contemporary art, and some old masterpieces too, in this iconic museum of groundbreaking design.

Make your way around Bonnefanten Museum and explore one of the finest collections of modern art in the country. See works from the School of Paris and minimalism as well as other art movements before heading to the collection of historical art on the first floor. As well as some impressive paintings you will find an extensive sculpture collection from all over Europe. The striking architecture of the building is widely considered to be one of the finest in Maastricht.

Bonnefanten Museum dates back to 1884, though it only moved to its current location in 1995. The ornate, domed building, known as the Ceramique, was designed by the architect Aldo Rossi and is one of Maastricht’s most striking examples of modern architecture. It is renowned for its excellent collections of both modern and historical art, although in recent years the focus has been on adding to the contemporary collections.

Find conceptual, minimalist and neo-expressionist works by artists such as Luciano Fabro, Iannis Kounnelis and Sol LeWitt all on permanent display. Discover local contemporary artists in the area dedicated to Maastricht’s art scene and take in a short film or two in the video room.

Head to the first floor to enjoy the ancient art collection. Here you will find a collection of 14th- and 15th-century Italian paintings and notable Dutch and Flemish works from the 16th century. Browse these then head to the superb collection of medieval sculpture. View altarpieces from across Western Europe and marvel at precious objects made from ivory, alabaster and wood.

End your visit with typical Dutch treats in the museum’s modern Café Ipanema, or browse the shop for unique art-related goods.

Bonnefanten Museum is located on Avenue Ceramique on the banks of the River Maas. It is a 15-minute walk from the city center and is served by regular buses. Parking is also available for a fee. The museum is closed on Mondays with the exception of public holidays. There is an entrance fee.
