Berlin State Opera

A variety of exceptional opera productions are staged in the hallowed halls of this Prussian treasure, which has been rebuilt tree times during its 250-year tenure.

Experience the rich history and contemporary flair of the Berlin State Opera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden, also known as Lindenoper), a jewel on Berlin’s famous tree-lined promenade. The ornate Prussian classicist opera house dates back to 1741, making it one of the world’s oldest state operas. See a diverse range of productions, from Baroque operas and ballets to thrilling contemporary creations. Explore the opera house and learn about a history almost as dramatic as the productions on the stage.

Appreciate the opera house’s exquisite design from the street. It was rebuilt in the 19th century after being razed by fire, only to be destroyed by bombings during World War II. Meticulously rebuilt under the German Democratic Republic government, the Berlin State Opera has retained its architectural beauty. Admire the pretty portico and trio of figures that top the pediment.

Enter the opera house and discover its richly decorated interior. Despite its compact size when compared to other opera institutions in Germany, the Berlin State Opera is imbued with a regal atmosphere that is faithful to King Frederick II’s 18th-century vision. Make your way into the main hall, which has 1,396 seats. Look up at the ornately decorated wings and ceiling, which are designed in an elegant Rococo style. Imagine how the stage would have looked during the opera house’s first performance, Cesare e Cleopatra,in 1742.

The Berlin State Opera is situated on Unter den Linden in the central district of Mitte. Nearby you’ll find Bebelplatz, a public square with a monument to the literature lost during the Nazi regime’s book burnings.

The opera house is easy to reach via the subway. Taxis are readily accessible from the street fronting the opera house at the end of the performance. Check out the Berlin State Opera’s program and book your tickets online or at the box office.

Arrive early at the opera to enjoy canapés, pretzels and refreshments in the lobby. Alternatively, you’ll find restaurants serving traditional German cuisine in the surrounding streets.
