With sandbar surf breaks, a shipwreck snorkeling site and a safe strip of lifeguard-patrolled ocean waves, it’s easy to see why this beach is favored among locals.

Discover some of Byron Bay’s best-kept secrets when you explore Belongil Beach. Stretching north from Byron Bay’s seawall toward the mouth of the meandering Belongil Creek, this 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) strip of golden sands has plenty of space and diverse appeal. The whole family can enjoy a relaxing swim under the watchful supervision of the local surf lifesaving club. Get your snorkel and mask on to discover the mysteries of the SS Wollongbar shipwreck or enjoy ultimate freedom at the beach’s nudist section.

Stroll along the wide expanse of sandy beach. The southern end fronts the center of town and is bordered by the picturesque seawall. At low tide, notice the wreck of the SS Wollongbar peeking out of the water. If the water is calm, explore the fascinating wreck with your snorkel and mask. The wreck’s surrounding sandbars create ideal conditions for surf swell. Experienced surfers take on these rolling breaks, while novices catch rides on the gentler waves in the middle of the beach.

Utilize the safe swimming area provided by professional lifeguards at the southern end of the beach. Swim between the flags and play in the shallows. Relax and stretch out on the golden sand or watch the surfers in action. Grab snacks and refreshing drinks from the cafés along the street just behind the beach.

Stroll to the northern end of the beach to visit the clothing-optional section and soak up the sun’s rays. Farther north, the mouth of Belongil Creek is a popular spot for wildlife spotting. You might see a colony of little terns nesting in the dunes, as well as osprey and white-bellied sea eagles flying above.

Belongil Beach is easy to access from the heart of Byron Bay. Walk to the beach from the Main Beach parking lot, which is adjacent to Belongil Beach’s southern border. Lifeguards patrol Belongil Beach during Easter, spring and summer vacation periods.
