Snap photos of the emerald peaks, take part in aquatic activities at the surf club and stroll through forest paths near this urban beach.

Main Beach is an urban bay that runs along the busiest part of Byron Bay along the Pacific Ocean. It is flanked by a picturesque topography of parks, nature trails and lookout spots. Bring your kids to play on this family-friendly beach on a warm and clear day.

Swim with your children in the gentle waves, which are calmed by the protective Cape Byron. This natural obstruction leads to smaller waves and safer swimming conditions. Learn to surf with the fairly small surf breaks and take out equipment from the Surf Club. The club dates back to 1907, making it one of the oldest of its kind north of Sydney. Note that surf lifeguards patrol the beach in the Australian summer.

Take your snorkeling gear to the ocean and spot the range of colorful fish attracted to the many caves and corals in this aquatic region. You can also take a boat trip to the Tassie II shipwreck to snorkel or scuba dive.

Enjoy the hot, sunny summers and work on your tan on a sun lounger. The bay offers excellent views of the surrounding verdant mountains. Spot dolphins year-round and whales from June to November.

Lay down a blanket on the sand for a picnic and bring snacks and drinks from town. Relax on a patch of grass amid the trees in Denning Park, which hugs the western back side of the beach. Have lunch at the sheltered picnic tables.

A little east is the Cape Byron Walking Track, which has trails leading to a scenic lighthouse. Keep moving east to reach the Fisherman’s Lookout and Palm Valley.

As its name suggests, Main Beach is the principal stretch of sand in the heart of Byron Bay. Take a bus to the town center and walk along the coast to find a spot on this beach. See nearby sights, such as Retrospect Galleries, the Byron Theatre and Byron Bay Library.
