Glorious paintings and sculptures adorn the grounds of a historic estate. Today the restored villa stands in the heart of Belmont University.

The Belmont Mansion in Nashville is an Italian-style villa that played an intriguing role in the U.S. Civil War. It belonged to Adelicia and Joseph Acklen and served as a home where they took vacations from the Louisiana plantations they owned. To visit Belmont Mansion, join one of the docent-led tours which will take you through the well-preserved and restored corridors and rooms.

Marvel at the Italian façade of the building, with its imposing white columns, white-trimmed windows and green shutters. A couple of gazebos complement the fountain and statues of the scenic front garden.

Tours of the interior begin every half hour. Admire the impressive original furniture and period décor that take you back to the 1800s.

Chat with the guide about Adelicia Acklen, a 19th-century socialite known for her charity work and art collection. Her husband Joseph Acklen was in the first class offered by the University of Alabama. Learn how slaves toiled in the basement of this mansion and across the grounds.

Study the various paintings and copies of works by European Masters. Check out the temporary exhibits that sometimes take place here after hours. The building, which is part of Belmont University, is also available to rent and is a popular spot for weddings.

The site opens daily from late morning until late afternoon, with guided tours on the hour and half hour. When buying entry tickets ask for discounts for seniors, military, students and youth. Very young children can enter for free.

The Belmont Mansion stands in the Hillsboro district in the southern part of Nashville. Travel by tram south from the city center for about 20 minutes and walk east for a few blocks to reach the house. If you drive, leave your car in the adjacent parking lot.

While in this area, visit other surrounding attractions such as Belcourt Theatre, the Peabody Esplanade and the McAfee Concert Hall.
