Al Wakrah Beach is a long white sand beach next to the coastal town of Al Wakrah. A major vacation destination for Qataris, the beach has recently been developed and now features excellent facilities. Visit Al Wakrah Beach if you like shoreline activities and people-watching. As this part of the ocean has very shallow water, this isn’t an ideal beach for swimming.
In reality, Al Wakrah Beach is three separate stretches of sand, all of which have been recently renovated and developed by local authorities. Farthest south is the family beach, which features three shaded playgrounds for kids. Next is the large public beach, which has gazebos and sun umbrellas for shade. Farthest north is an additional stretch of sand near the town’s souk or marketplace.
All the areas have been developed as leisure destinations. Facilities include sun umbrellas and gazebos, toilets, showers, barbecue pits and green spaces.
The shallow water makes the beach area safe for children to play, although it is so shallow that it isn't really possible to swim. Instead, bring kids here to play soccer or volleyball and explore the wildlife in the shallow pools.
Behind the stretch of the beach near the souk is a long promenade lined with restaurants and cafés, many of which have outdoor seating. Choose from traditional Arab cuisine, Indian or Italian food, burgers, coffee and ice cream. Alternatively, bring supplies for your own barbecue on the beach.
Spend a morning or evening wandering in the Al Wakrah marketplace, which is modeled on a traditional souk. Explore the winding lanes and check out the eclectic array of goods for sale, which range from jewelry to live chickens.
Al Wakrah is a 20-minute drive south of Doha. The beach has 600 parking spaces however, come early, as this area is a popular weekend destination for local families and can get quite busy. Buses travel frequently to Al Wakrah from the bus station in central Doha.
