The Palatine Chapel of Palermo is an authentic jewel of medieval art, located inside the Palazzo dei Normanni, an ancient royal seat and today the seat of the Sicilian regional parliament. Commissioned by the Norman king Roger II in 1130 and consecrated in 1143, the chapel is dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle and is an extraordinary example of a fusion of Western, Byzantine and Islamic culture, typical of the Norse era Inside, the chapel is decorated with magnificent golden mosaics, made by Byzantine masters, representing biblical scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The centerpiece of the entire mosaic cycle is the majestic figure of Christ Pantocrator, represented in the apse dome, with his severe and benevolent face dominating the entire chapel. Around Christ are figures of angels, saints and apostles. Lighting is another fascinating element: the light reflected on the gold mosaics creates a mystical and solemn atmosphere.
