The city's significant African influence makes it a hub of Afro-Brazilian culture. As the first capital of Colonial Brazil, Salvador is one of the oldest cities in the Americas. It was founded in 1549 by Tomé de Sousa as part of the Portuguese Empire's establishment of the General Government of Brazil.
