What you can expect

Venture through the world’s oldest laurel forest via your off-road vehicle and pass coastal villages perched on the cliffs of west Madeira Island. Discover ancient trees, drive by hidden waterfalls, and make your way to Porto Moniz to swim in the natural saltwater pools.

Wake up by sunrise for a full day of adventure and meet your guide in the lobby of your Funchal hotel. Climb into your off-road vehicle and head to the heart of the laurel forest of lush evergreen trees and large flat-leave bushes inhabit two thirds of the island. The mild subtropical climate makes it easy to explore this 40-million-year-old forest where ancient trees blanket the valleys and waterfalls cascade from the cliffs.

Next, descend the rocky terrain to the coastal villages of Sao Vicente and Seixal to marvel at the gorgeous Portuguese architecture. Listen as your professional guide shares stories of the region’s history along with current efforts to conserve the island’s forest and wildlife.

Looking up to the cliffs, watch for the endangered native Zino’s and Fea’s petrel birds swooping down to hunt and soaring back to the cliffs to feed their young. Leaving Seixal, head to Porto Moniz for a chance to swim in the natural saltwater pools, formed when lava clashed with the Atlantic, before your guide escorts you back to your hotel.
