The largest of the Phlegraean islands was among the first, in 1966, to obtain the Denomination of Controlled Origin for its native vines Forastera, Biancolella and Per ‘e Palummo.
As early as 700 BC.C. Ischia was called “Aenaria” or “land of vines and wines” and it seems that it was the Greeks who introduced the cultivation of vines around the eighth century BC.C. then continued by the Romans.
The wine production area of the island of Ischia corresponds to its geographical boundaries and is characterized by well-drained hilly and volcanic soils that give elegant wines mineral notes, mixed with typical scents of the Mediterranean scrub, the conformation of the soils is not very easy and does not make the work of Ischia winemakers easy, and we rightly speak of heroic viticulture in Ischia as the vineyards insist, for the most part, on terraced or steep rocky surfaces, bordered by typical green tuff walls called “parracine”:
