Malibu. There is not much more to say, this renowned beach town is synonymous with surfers, beautiful beaches, mountains, endless sunny California days, movie stars, multi million dollar estates — and in recent years, wine. It all started in the late 80’s and today the Malibu Coastal Region is officially recognized by the AVA (American Viticultural Association) and proudly boasts 50 boutique vineyards. Located high above the Pacific and tucked away in the Santa Monica Mountains, the Malibu Coastal Region benefits from the cool ocean air and volcanic soil creating the most ideal conditions for growing in Southern California, and there is only one way to experience it all. You’ve got to get up here and see it for yourself.

We will start out on the Pacific Coast Highway at the award winning Rosenthal tasting room. Known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosenthal was one of the first producers in the area. Sampling a flight of wine here will ignite your palate as we continue north up the coastline and into the hills. Winding through some of the most scenic and iconic canyon roads in LA County you will next arrive at Cielo, a 35 million private estate and vineyard. Perched high atop the Santa Monica Mountains Cielo is surrounded by 18 acres of grapes. We’ll begin with a guided walk to a scenic overlook of the property (perfect for pictures) and then onto a private tasting of the estate wines, paired with a superb selection of meats, cheeses, pickled vegetables, handmade crostini, and fresh bread. You will learn about the wine, the region, and history of the area.

Our final stop, just 15 minutes further into the mountains is the Cornell tasting room. With peacocks roaming the property Cornell will transport you back to the days of the old west. Situated next door to the historic Old Place Restaurant (the towns original post office) Cornell offers wines from all of the local vineyards in addition to some relatively unknown Central Coast varietals. After this tasting we will start making our return trip via one of the most beautiful sections of Mulholland Highway.
