The majestic Leiria Castle is one of the city's main visiting points. Situated on top of a hill, Leiria Castle offers stunning views of the city and surrounding area. Its construction dates back to the 12th century and today it houses a museum that tells the history of the region, as well as contemporary art exhibitions.
Leiria is also known for being the birthplace of great Portuguese poets and writers. The famous writer Eça de Queiroz, who is considered one of the greatest Portuguese writers, lived part of his life in Leiria. In addition to him, the writer Afonso Lopes Vieira was also born in this city and his works portray the beauty and poetry of Leiria.
The city has a charming historic center, full of squares, picturesque streets and historic buildings. Praça Rodrigues Lobo, for example, is a social gathering place where residents gather to chat and enjoy the various cafes and restaurants around. Furthermore, the Misericórdia Church, with its baroque façade, is a masterpiece of religious architecture, which recalls the incredible story of the Jews who passed through the city.
