Legend has it that in the 7th century, a deity descended upon the mountain behind Kasuga Taisha, arriving on the back of a deer. Because of this, deer have been revered as divine messengers in Nara since ancient times. Today, approximately 1,300 deer inhabit Nara Park, beloved by visitors from around the world.
