What you can expect

Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck and Frederic Storck were at the heart of one of Romania’s most fascinating artistic dynasties. Their story is not just about art—it’s about innovation, independence, and the shaping of cultural identity. Today, their former residence in Bucharest stands as a museum, offering a glimpse into the creative world of a visionary couple and their family legacy.

Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck (1879–1969) was a trailblazer. Educated in Munich and Paris, she returned to Romania at the dawn of the 20th century and became the first woman professor at a state art academy in Europe—a revolutionary achievement in a male-dominated field. As an artist, she embraced monumental mural painting, filled with symbolic and allegorical scenes. Her style blended Art Nouveau and Secession influences with Romanian motifs, mythology, and a powerful feminist message. Beyond her canvases, Cecilia was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and co-founded the Association of Women Painters and Sculptors in Romania.

Frederic Storck (1872–1942) came from a family of sculptors of German origin, a lineage that profoundly shaped Romanian sculpture. He was the son of Karl Storck and the younger brother of Carol Storck—both established artists. Frederic inherited their classical approach, but added his own refinement and depth. His sculptures, often portraying important figures from Romanian history and culture, reflect a strong sense of dignity and realism. He was also a mentor to young sculptors and a dedicated promoter of Romanian art.

Together, Cecilia and Frederic created a world where painting and sculpture coexisted in harmony. Their home, designed in the Neo-Romanian style, is a masterpiece in itself. The walls were hand-painted by Cecilia with rich murals depicting mythological, symbolic, and historical themes. Frederic’s sculptures, displayed throughout the house and garden, bring a timeless grace to the space. The interiors are filled with handcrafted furniture, stained glass, and decorative details that speak to their shared aesthetic vision.

Today, the Frederic and Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck Museum offers an intimate journey into their lives and creative partnership. It preserves not only their artworks but also the spirit of an era when Romanian art was boldly stepping into modernity. Visiting this house-museum is like entering a living canvas—one painted, sculpted, and dreamed into being by a couple who believed in art as a force of identity, memory, and change.
