Embroidered paintings are paintings that embroiderers sew with needles and thread based on sketches drawn by Japanese painters, and are then made into wall hangings or folding screens. They were actively produced as Japan's representative fine arts and crafts, mainly during the Meiji period, and are considered the pinnacle of Japanese embroidery. Embroidered paintings are characterized by their realism that goes beyond painting, due to the shine of the overlapping silk threads and the various embroidery techniques. Some works even have the light reflection calculated to the last detail, and they decorated the Meiji Palace and were displayed at the World Exposition, stunning Westerners.
