What you can expect

Begin your journey with a pick-up from your hotel in Yerevan and head to Khor Virap, one of Armenia's most revered pilgrimage sites. Known for its deep connection to Gregory the Illuminator, the founder of the Armenian Church, Khor Virap is where he was imprisoned for 14 years. As you explore, take in the breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Ararat, Armenia's national symbol and the highest peak in the Armenian Highlands. Your expert guide will share fascinating stories of the site's history, architecture, and spiritual significance, offering you a deeper understanding of Armenian culture and heritage.

Next, make your way to the charming village of Areni, famous for its local winery. Stroll through lush vineyards and indulge in a wine-tasting session featuring a variety of organic wines, each with its distinct flavor profile. Take the opportunity to purchase some of the wines or other organic products, a perfect souvenir from your journey.

The adventure continues with a visit to the ancient Areni Cave 1, a remarkable archaeological site dating back to the Chalcolithic period (4500-3400 BC). Explore the cave’s vast chambers, adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and learn how this site was used for ancient rituals and mortuary practices. The dry, stable environment has preserved organic materials, allowing us to glimpse life thousands of years ago. Your guide will lead you along well-maintained boardwalks through narrow passageways to uncover the world’s oldest known wine-pressing installation (dating back to around 4000 BC), as well as the oldest leather shoe (about 3600 BC). Be on the lookout for the unique colony of cave weta, large insects native to Armenia, near the cave entrance.

After your spelunking adventure, head to Noravank, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest examples of medieval Armenian architecture. Explore this stunning monastery, famous for its intricate designs and its connection to one of Armenia’s most renowned schools of architecture and manuscript creation. Immerse yourself in the serene beauty and rich history of this ancient site.

Conclude your day of exploration with a return to Yerevan, arriving between 6 pm and 7 pm, filled with memories of Armenia’s historical treasures.
