Activity itinerary

Belmullet
  • 20m
The walk commences in Carter Square where I tell the story of the founding of the town in 1824 by William Carter. Stories of famous visitors such as JM Synge and JB Yeats will also be recounted here.
Belmullet
  • 10m
The tour continues to the docks and along the Belmullet Canal built in 1845. The canal links Blacksod and Broadhaven Bays and the water always flows from Blacksod to Broadhaven. Find out why.
Belmullet
  • 15m
After crossing the canal via the 'new' bridge we head to the sea shore to see the old town wells which were in use until the 1880's
Belmullet
  • 15m
We will stop at the Community Hospital which was the location of the Belmullet Workhouse build in the 1850's. The stigma of the workhouse is very much associated with the Great Famine.
Belmullet
  • 10m
As we make our way along the Tallaght Road we will observe the plaques detailing the Prophecies of Brian Rua who lived in the 17th century. Let's see how many of them came true!
Belmullet
  • 10m
On arrival at Blacksod Bay we hear the legend of the Children of Lir who spend their last 300 years as swans on Inis Glóra, an island just off the coast of the Mullet Peninsula.
Belmullet
  • 20m
At the RNLI inshore lifeboat station we hear stories of ships of the retreating Spanish Armada which came into Blacksod Bay sheltering from stormy seas in September 1588. A rendition of The Four Farrelys' by Percy French is performed here.
Belmullet
  • 10m
A visit to 'The Temple of the Tides of Time' instillation by Travis Price will cause debate as does all public art. Locals call this the 'Bellmullet Bus Stop'.
Belmullet
  • 10m
Crossing the canal via the stainless steel footbridge (also by Travis Price) we return to Belmullet 'city centre' to complete the tour. On completion we will have 5,000 steps under our belt.
