Part I: Auschwitz I. Auschwitz I, the original Auschwitz camp, was established by Nazi Germany in 1940 in the Polish town of Oświęcim. Initially intended to hold Polish political prisoners, Auschwitz I quickly became part of a larger network of camps used for forced labor, medical experiments, and, later, systematic extermination. The camp is known for its infamous sign over the entrance gate, "Arbeit macht frei" ("Work sets you free"), a bitterly ironic slogan given the camp's brutal conditions. Auschwitz I contained rows of red-brick barracks where prisoners lived in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions and were subjected to starvation, hard labor, torture, and inhumane medical experiments. This section of the Auschwitz complex also housed the camp’s administrative headquarters, including the office of the notorious commandant Rudolf Höss. Today, Auschwitz I serves as a museum and memorial, preserved to educate about the Holocaust's horrors and to commemorate the lives lost.

Part II: Birkenau. Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz II, was the largest part of the Auschwitz concentration camp complex established by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II. Located about 3 kilometers from the main Auschwitz camp (Auschwitz I), Birkenau was constructed in 1941 as part of the Nazis' "Final Solution," the plan for the mass extermination of European Jews. Covering over 400 acres, Birkenau was designed explicitly as a death camp, with rows of barracks, electrified fences, guard towers, and rail tracks that led directly to its gas chambers and crematoria. The camp was divided into sections for different groups, including Jews, Poles, Romani people, Soviet POWs, and others. Its most notorious feature was the infamous railway gate, known as the "Gate of Death," where deportees arrived in overcrowded cattle cars, many of whom were sent immediately to their deaths in gas chambers.
