The site of the sanctuary has been inhabited since the Neolithic period but reached its greatness under the reconstruction program of Pericles in the mid-5th century BC. Many of its major temples, like the Parthenon and the Erechtheion, were then rebuilt in the form that we know today.

Stoa of Attalos

Roman Agora

Hadrian's Library

Temple of Olympian Zeus

The construction of the Olympieion, or Temple of Olympian Zeus, began in the 6th century BC, but it wasn’t completed until the 2nd century AD, under the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The temple is supported by 17-meter-high Corinthian-style columns and was one of the largest in ancient Greece. It is situated 500 meters east of the Acropolis.
