Your sightseeing in Tashkent will start visiting old Tashkent to see the 16thBarak-Khan Madrasah complex for your first look at the ubiquitous and glorious ceramic tile work, and the MuiMuborak Library of 16th century with an original Koran handwritten on vellum in the 7th century. Lunch, then we’ll see the Applied Arts Museum, which showcases some of the best historical-artistic examples of the arts of Uzbekistan, in the mansion of the Imperial Russian diplomat Alexander Polovtsev. He commissioned the intricately decorated mansion expressly to house his extensive collections of unique handicrafts and textiles. After the Soviet revolution, the government nationalized his cherished home and opened it to the public as a museum. Polovtsev’s rare examples of folk art such as vintage ceramics, handmade rugs, and wood carvings are on display in the wondrous house with its colorfully decorated ceilings. We drive in the old part of Tashkent and stop at Chorsu market and see Kukeldash madrasah of 16th century.

Itchan Kala

Khiva, once famous for its slave trade and ruthless emirs, is the most intact and the most remote of Central Asia’s Silk Road cities. The Soviets removed the residents, restored the city and made it an ‘open air’ museum. Happily, since independence, the old families have moved back and life is vibrant once again within the baked mud walls. There is a wonderful carpet shop in Khiva with unique silk carpets and suzani inspired by the designs of the tiles and doors of the city. We will spend the day exploring more of Khiva and visiting Juma Mosque, Kukhana Ark Shir, Gaza Khan Madrasaand some favorite mosques and madrasas.
Day 7: Drive to Ayazkala, Topraqkala and Nukus.
