Walking along the streets of old Gyumri one still seems to hear the voice of the smiths hammers, it seems that a cart will appear from the street corner and the carter will call to show the city. The old houses, a part of which fortunately resisted the devastating earthquake in 1988. These buildings are notable with their architectural solutions, combination of colorful stones and masterfully elaborated bas-reliefs. Gyumri has always been the center of cultural events.

Harichavank Monastery

The monastery complex of Harichavank is situated on the western slope of Mount Aragats ,on a rocky cape. According to the architectural studies, the complex was founded in the 7th century. In the 13th century the main church was built. In the 19th century the complex became the summer residence of Catholicoses. Not far from the main buildings there is a small chapel which is of great interest. The chapel is built on a piece of rock, which as a result of an earthquake split from the cape and the chapel is now towering over the canyon.

On the way to Garni a short stop at the "Charents Arch" from where opens a breathtaking view over Ararat valley and Mount Ararat. Garni Temple, the only extant temple in Armenia, dating back to the era of paganism and Hellenism. It was devoted to the pagan god of sun- "Mithra" The temple was built by Greek slaves in 76 B.C. It was the summer residence of Armenian kings over 4 centuries.
The Monastery of Geghard

Gegard monastery - the miracle of Armenian architecture, built in the 13th century. A unique complex of cave structures, located in a pictures que valley (both are in UNESCO World Heritage List). Geghard was initially known simply as Ayri vank (Cave Monastery). The present buildings comprising it date back to 10-13th cc., at which time it was renamed as Geghard meaning "lance" (spear)in Armenian. The name refers to the biblical lance used by a Roman soldier to pierce Christ's& body to findout if he was alive or not. The lance was kept in Geghard for a long time before being moved to the museum of Echmiadzin Cathedral. The main church, constructed in 1215, is the oldest building in the monastery complex. Avazan church, 1283, is carved right into the solid rock and is an incomparable work of art. It leads to a rectangular portico and then to another church deeper in the rock. Along the southern and eastern walls of the monastery, high above the valley, medieval dwellings appear. The monastery has withstood many assaults during a period of seven hundred years. Its walls have sheltered many scholars and it was revered throughout Armenia as one of the greatest spiritual and cultural centers in the country. Hundreds of khachkars (cross-stones) and caves are built in the rocks surrounding the Monastery.
