Overview

The 13,803-foot (4,207.3-meter) peak of Mauna Kea is Hawaii's highest point, and a popular spot for star-gazing. The mountain is home of many Hawaiin legends and the best place to watch the sunset, take pictures and star gazing.

Detailed initaray:

  1. Leaving Kailua Kona:
    Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel - 3 pm
  2. Arrive Mauna Kea visitor center 4.30 pm
  3. 30 min break at visitor center, includes a sandwich and hot chocolate/ coffee. This is the time to buy souvenirs from the visitor center as well. A really cool place to get more information about the mountain, see cool stargazing pictures and souvenirs.
  4. Head to the Summit - the highest place of the mountain perfect place for stargazing. Note, summit accessibility depends on weather conditions. If closed, we are not going to be able to go all the way to the top. Check Mauna Kea website for the weather.**
  5. 7 pm - Head back to Kailua Kona
  6. 8.30 pm - Back at King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, End of trip

We will meet at downtown Kailua Kona by the King Kamehameha hotel. From there we drive to the magnificent Mauna Kea mountain. Mauna Kea is a dormant shield volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi. Its peak is 4,207.3 m above sea level, making it the highest point in Hawaii and the island with the second highest high point, behind New Guinea. From the moment you enter this beautiful area, you will feel like you are on a different planet. The air is really thin and the nature is similar to volcano it looks like a new earth. Symbolic of the umbilical cord connecting the island of Hawaii to the heavens, Mauna Kea holds a powerful spiritual energy. This unique vortex is ideal for meditations. You will feel like you are floating in the clouds and at night, the sky becomes alive. We will visit the summit that is all the way at the top, see the observatories and take plenty of pictures to document this moment of a lifetime. Sandwiches and hot chocolate provided as part of the trip.
