Start with a drive past Cospicua, whose double-fortified harbor has hosted ships since the days of the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC. Head to the nearby docks of Birgu while your guide explains the long history of sailors, merchants, and soldiers who vied for dominance of the Maltese islands in the days before Valletta rose to prominence.

At Senglea, you can learn about the city's role in resisting the Ottoman invasion during the Great Siege of 1565 while you take a walk along the narrow streets and admire the towering walls that still stand over the Grand Harbour. From there, head to Marsa for a look at the Marsovin Cellars and an introduction to the world of Maltese wine.
