South Wellfleet

Head here for easy access to outstanding natural surroundings, with windswept beaches and wildlife habitats on your doorstep.

South Wellfleet is part of the larger town of Wellfleet but has many attractions of its own, ranging from a wildlife sanctuary to stunning sea views. Bring your binoculars and try bird-spotting in the swampy surrounding habitats or go to the beach for surfing and sunbathing.

Wellfleet was officially recognized as a town in 1763. It began to attract tourists at the end of the 19th century. For much of its history, people have fished in its bountiful waters. Enjoy the area’s seafood catch or try fishing on your own.

Discover the wealth of nature in the area at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Follow several walking trails where you may encounter local fauna in their natural habitat. Hike through wooded areas and listen for bird calls. Depending on the time of year, look for red-winged blackbirds or snowy egrets at Goose Pond. The White Cedar Swamp and Fox Island Marsh and Pilgrim Spring Woodlands Conservation Area and Trails offer more tranquil nature experiences with a variety of hiking choices.

Other popular attractions in the area include the Marconi Wireless Station. Inventor Guglielmo Marconi’s groundbreaking early wireless station operated in this part of South Wellfleet. Transatlantic communication from President Theodore Roosevelt was sent to King Edward VII from here. Although the station is no longer here, the site is still an important piece of technological history. Ascend to the viewing platform for a fantastic vista of the coastline.

Nearby is Marconi Beach, which is named in honor of the pioneering Italian inventor. It’s a narrow stretch of sand hemmed in by sea cliffs and dunes. Come here to relax or bring a board and join the surfers out on the Atlantic Ocean waves. The beach is suitable for families, with plenty of practical facilities including bathrooms and changing rooms.

Reach South Wellfleet in just over a 1.5-hour drive from Boston Logan International Airport. Buses serve the local area and provide connections to the airport, while the town itself is walkable.
